Sustainability at Bright P-12 College
Overview
Bright P-12 College has a strong, hands-on Sustainability program that aims to build lifelong environmental awareness and practical skills in our students. The program connects classroom learning with real-world action through gardening, waste reduction initiatives, and community partnerships.
What the School Does
- School Garden and Horticulture Program – Students from a range of year levels help maintain the school’s vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and outdoor learning spaces. They learn planting, propagation, composting, soil health, and seasonal food production.
- Waste and Recycling initiatives – The school promotes responsible waste sorting, soft-plastic collection (where possible), composting and worm-farming programs, and whole-school awareness around reducing waste via the river detectives program.
- Energy and Resource Awareness – Students take part in activities that encourage reducing energy use, conserving water, and making sustainable choices across the school.
- Community Connections – Partnerships with local groups and initiatives—such as horticulture businesses and the broader Bright community—help extend learning beyond the school grounds. (This includes practical opportunities like the Landcare plantings and the Bright Food Coop fruit, vegetable and plant sales).
